Valery Shumakov (b.1931, Moscow, Russia) ::: Article

- cardiosurgeon. One of the founders of Russian clinic transplantology. In 1956 graduated from the First Sechenov Moscow Medical Institute. Having finished his post-graduate studies (1956-59), obtained his PhD degree in 1966. Between 1963-66 was senior research fellow at the Moscow Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery. Between 1966-69 was head of the Laboratory of Artificial Heart and Auxiliary Blood Circulation. In 1969 was conferred the rank of professor. From 1969 to 1974 was head of the Transplantation and Artificial Organs Department. Since 1974 to present has been director of the Transplantology and Artificial Organs Research Institute (Ministry of Health, Russian Federation). Head of the Physics of Living Systems Department at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Also head of the Laboratory of Biomedical Informatics at the Institute of Automation and Projecting (Russian Academy of Sciences), where he has founded the higher school training various specialists, incl. transplantologists, surgeons, physicists, mechanics and others. He published 17 monographs and more than 400 scientific writings. Author of more than 100 inventions both in the field of clinical surgery and at the turn of medicine and exact sciences. Chief editor of the magazine "Transplantology and Artificial Organs", senior editor of the Big Medical Encyclopedia section "Medical Technique". Winner of numerous international prizes and awards. Full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Specialist in the field of transplantology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor. Currently is head of the Laboratory of Xenotransplantation at the Transplantology and Artificial Organs Research Institute (Ministry of Health, Russian Federation).
