Boris Groys (b.1947, East Berlin, Germany) ::: Article

Philosopher, culturologist, art theorist. Studied mathematics and philosophy at the Leningrad University (1965-71). From 1976 to 1981 worked as a research assistant at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, Department of Structural Linguistics. In 1981 immigrated to West Germany. Author of several principal publications on philosophical interpretation of Russian culture, researcher of the Moscow conceptual school phenomenon, specialist in Russian art of 20th century. Among the published books are "Gesamtkunstwerk Stalin" (Munich, 1988; Nimes, 1990; Milan, 1992; Princeton, 1992); "Diary of a Philosopher" (Paris, 1989), "Die Kunst des Fliehens" (with I. Kabakov, Munich, 1991), "Zeitgenossische Kunst aus Moskau - Von der Neo-Avantgarde zum Post-Stalinismus" (Munich, 1991), "Uber das Neue. Versuch einer Kulturokonomie" (Munich, 1992); "Utopia and Exchange" (Moscow, 1993), "Die Erfindung Russlands" (Munich, 1995), "Logik der Sammlung" (Munich, 1997), "Kunst-Kommentare" (Vienna, 1997), "Unter Verdacht. Eine Phanomenologie der Medien" (Munich, 2000) and others. From 1982 to 1987 worked as a freelance author in Cologne. In 1992 obtained his PhD degree from the University of Muenster. Delivers lectures; taught a course at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, 1988), and at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, 1991). Since 1994 has been professor of Philosophy, Art and Media Theory at the Academy of Design (Karlsruhe, Germany). Numerous publications on philosophy and art in magazines, catalogues, books and anthologies in different countries. In 2001 was elected vice chancellor at the Academy of Fine Arts (Vienna, Austria). Member of the International Association of Critics of Art (AICA).
