Philosopher, ALife theorist, critic. In 1985 graduated from the University of California at Berkley, PhD. His research work focuses on artificial life, and his philosophical approach to ALife is based on biological evolution. Author of such books and software as "Rudiments of Logic" (together with G.Myro, T.Monroe, Englewood: Prentice Hall, 1987), "Logic by Design: Exploring Formal Systems with Proof Designer" (with J.Moor, monograph and software for Apple Macintosh, 1989), "Venn" [Software for Apple Macintosh.] (with J.Moor, Ventura: Academic Courseware Exchange, repeatedly republished, 1989-1998), "Supple Adaptation: Emergent Thought Experiments about Evolution, Life, and Mind" (MIT Press, 2003). Editor of the magazine "Artificial Life" (MIT Press), president of the International Society for Artificial Life. Co-editor of the following miscellanies of international conferences' material on artificial life: "Artificial Life VII" (with J.McCaskill, N.Packard, S.Rasmussen) and "Artificial Life VIII" (with R.Standish, H.Abbass, Cambridge: MIT Press). Writings on the subject, incl. in German, French, Italian, published in various books and academic philosophical publications. Numerous publications in such magazines as "Midwest Studies in Philosophy", "The Journal of Philosophy", "Philosophy and Phenomenological Research", "Adaptive Behavior, Brain and Cognition", "Evolutionary Computation", "Leonardo", "Computational Economics" and many others. Took part in numerous international conferences and symposiums. He is professor at the Reed College, Department of Philosophy (Portland, Oregon, USA).
